How to create my custom catchment areas or POI files

Our Live Mapping Tool supports three file formats for uploading catchment areas or POIs – Shapefile, KML and GeoJSON. To create these files, the minimum information that will need to be provided is:

  1. Unique ID of each entry, with the column labelled as "Name"
  2. Exact addresses
  3. Longitude of your address
  4. Latitude of you address

Live Mapping Tool uses the WGS84 cartographic method (EPSG 4326 projection), where the latitude and longitude shall be expressed as Decimal Degrees in their respective column for each exact address. For example:

NOTE: If the file is not in the correct format, you will still be able to upload it but it will not load on the map.

There are some basic requirements when creating your files:

  • After creating your file, it must be saved in one .zip folder before it is ready for upload.
  • The file must contain Name and Geometry fields.
    • Name must be alphanumeric and can include hyphens (-).
    • Name must be unique and be present for all Geometries.
    • Name cannot start with a hyphen can cannot contain any special character (e.g. !@#$%^*).
    • Name can be anything, such as the name of your branches.
    • If the file doesn’t have a Name field, you will not be able to upload your file onto the tool.

When creating catchment areas, you will need to create polygons that will serve as your catchment areas. Other than polygons, you also have the option of “dropping a pin” and determining a set radius around your pin to be your catchment area. This is useful when you have a lot of addresses such as your store branches and you want to create a catchment area around them.

To generate these files, talk to the IT specialists in your organisation or your Roy Morgan representative.
